Description

This Messier Object, also known as NGC 3623, is a spiral galaxy located 40 million light years away in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +13 degrees.  It is a magnitude 10 galaxy which spans 9 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 110,000 light years, slightly smaller than our Milky Way.

This galaxy is the 61st brightest galaxy in the sky.  We are viewing this galaxy about 12 degrees from edge-on.

This galaxy is sometimes called uninteresting, but I disagree.  The dust bands are unusual, forming an apparent inner ring but also extending both out and in.  The band appears to cross the core within a slight bar – our low viewing angle makes that bar tough to see.  Several blue star clouds are seen in the mid and outer disk areas on the right side.
